Free as the Breeze

Irresponsibility:
That's the goal, at least for me.
To move invisible and quiet,
Skirt the edges of the riot,
Seeking those in pain.

Knees aflame, they gasp and choke,
Eyeballs dripping through the smoke.
I puff myself, a gentle breathing,
Cool their anger, soothe their seething,
Soft as summer rain.

"Why?" the other sprites inquire.
"We're the gusts that fan the fire!"
But that's for them.  I weigh my chances,
Risk the snares within their glances,
Dive and dive again.

Nothing forces me to go,
Nothing but the drive to know
That I'm my own, a sovereign creature,
Not a student, not a teacher,
No one's specimen.

Laughter bubbles where I pass,
Sweet relief from searing gas.
Despising all their stupid factions,
Mine the simple gut reactions
Hurt inspires within.

Chaos guides my fellow's wings.
Perched above, they launch their stings.
But down along the streets and trenches
Throwing help and monkey wrenches:
That's what makes me grin.
