111th Weekly Poetry Contest honorable mention: VILANELLE

by Ciarán Parkes

Your new boyfriend out drinking, I give you a head massage for old time's sake, lying on the bed beside you, my free hand reaching to where yours lie across the duvet's frozen lake. Your new boyfriend out drinking, I insist I don't feel exploited by massage and nothing else, half sounding fake. Lying on the bed beside you, my two hands moving down your back, your sigh: that feels so good, difficult to take. Your new boyfriend out drinking, I try not to get too comfortable, you try, feeling so relaxed, to stay awake. Lying on the bed beside you, my arms becoming stiff, the words that lie between each word we say, each breath you take. Your new boyfriend out drinking, I lying on the bed beside you.
