The Cardinal

Within deep cedar copses far withdrawn,
A hidden cardinal caroled to its mate;
It was as though the silent lips of dawn
Upon a sudden grew articulate.

Not Memnon's voice melodious long ago
Across the arid wastes of desert heard,
Was like this rapturous rhythmic overflow,
Was like the golden music of this bird!
