All for the Sake of a Dance

All for the sake of a dance with him,
I asked daddy to buy me a gown,
had my curls coiled with pearls
& a broach to match my brocade.

All for the sake of a dance with him,
I spread lies about those to attend,
speared gossip to all who knew him,
assuring that I would be chosen.

All for the sake of a dance with him,
I saw him take the arm of a girl
with suntanned skin, and a winsome smile --
a bat of her eyes, he twirled her away.

All for the sake of a dance with him,
I tore the pearls from my hair,
stamped my foot, tore my dress,
& made plans for my revenge.

All for the sake of a dance with him,
I studied the Book of Spells,
& soon I devised a lasting curse
on the girl who stole my man.

All for the sake of a dance with him,
I see her skin wither and pale,
he sits beside her, holds her hand,
but by springtime, she'll be dead,

& we'll dance.
