There in the corner stands the chair
I have many memories of sitting there
Up on grandpa’s knee I’d sit and listen to his many tales
Of knights in armour rescuing the girls
Or tales of his life as a soldier in the 2nd world war
In the chair grandma would sit
Singing songs as she used to knit
Recipes for food from long ago
Like cottage pie and jelly and cream
The tales she told of long ago
As a maid in a country house
Or when her brother scared her with a mouse
My mother would sit in the chair
Muttering and cursing
As she combed my hair
Smiling at me as I fell asleep
Singing tunes to help me rest
She would tell me stories of frogs and toads
And a place called far away
My dad sat in the chair smiling and laughing
With me at silly people on TV
He would tickle me and poke me
He told me tales from his misspent youth
With the mods and rockers
Or of his time in the civil defence
It’s my turn now to sit in the chair
I relive memories of the people I knew
I hum tunes from the past
I look through pictures and books
I sit and remember the times
That I have sat in the chair
