A Fairy Tale

The one about the Queen.

They portrayed her as evil

but she was just protecting her son--

really a goat, magicked to human form,

but she loved him--

(it was a perfect disguise,

but she knew, course she knew).

So Goat-boy was a prize catch:

handsome and kind, if a bit headstrong,

Possessive and Aggressive, but

there was the heir to the kingdom gig

and an undemanding palate

to balance any foibles that he had.

Princesses flocked to his side,

Attended balls, tourneys, and what have you,

but Mrs. Q tendered them a chilly reception,

setting impossible tasks, feeding them to monsters,

etc.;

she was up to all the usual tricks

her late father'd put her through,

but hey,

they didn't have to accept the challenges.

Anyway, truth to tell,

Sir Caprid wasn't interested.

Not at all. Boys neither, but

the Young Ladies' parents

didn't care about that.

There was a lot of talk,

angry words, even name-calling,

and, Where the hell is he?

And, When I get my hands on...

No one knew.

Gone to live with his Da, the old Nurse finally said,

but only the Queen knew where that was.

She wasn't talking,

pretended to be wild with grief,

but inside she knew it was time.

Late in the spring when the nannies

dropped their kids

certain little cuties were singled out by Her Highness,

given to the Herdsman's daughter for special care.

Everyone was happy,

except the Princesses' parents,

and one or two princesses,

who really had liked the faux prince.
