Although detractors argued that he never mastered Paganini’s Caprice No. 1
and that his arpeggios lacked conviction, adoring fans still thronged
the basilica to honor the memory of the great entertainer. Along the nave,
members of the Society of Music Lovers stood at attention. All eyes
trained on the kidnapped woman as she took her lawful place among
the mourners. Neither benighted nor benedight, neither fearful nor
courageous, she had refused to execute a great kindness. She had killed
in self-defense to set herself free. She wept openly but silently until
the conclusion of the mass, and then, to the interest of exactly no one,
she quit the church and went on with her life.
