The pool is full of laughter
As children splash
And hold their breath
For as long as they can

The lifeguard
Stalwart as ever
Never lets his eyes or mind wander
Away from the water in front of him

I sit on the edge of the pool
My feet dangling in the water
They are misshapen
By the waves

I sit for a while
Wondering when
I should enter
The water

The time never
Seems
To be
Right

On a nearby bench
There is a sad sight
The reddest of popsicles
Turning to mush

I take a deep breath
And jump into the pool
As my skin breaks the surface
I can't hep but think of the popsicle

It was once something desirable
But now it was
A cherry puddle on
A wooden bench.
