Monkey Dance, The. To a Jealous Wife

Let those who think a Man sincere,
Devote themselves to Hope and Fear,
With all the curs'd Inquietude,
Which on those Passions still intrude.
False Joys and Griefs alternative
Are all the Pleasures Love can give.
With endless Doubts, and Fears perplext,
One Hour we love, and hate the next:
Yet Slaves to Passion still remain,
As Monkey drags his Clog and Chain:
With antick Grins he hopps about,
And fondly thinks him free,
But when he would go further out
Pug has no Liberty.

The Clog and Chain his Motions bound,
And Monkey at his Post is found.
So jealous Lovers, without starting,
Can buss, and rage, and threaten Parting:
But when to Practice they descend,
The boasted Pow'r is at an End:
Their Fury on themselves they wreak,
And hug the Chain they strive to break.
