The Toadstool's Defense

Up from the depths of soft, decaying earth
Leaps in one secret night my scarlet birth;
Beneath me, safe, when chilling spring rain slays,
A gauze ephemeron his gittern plays,
And violet-wingèd fays my shelter prize—
The fool comes by, and eats of me, and dies!
