Carts Full of Air (rensaku)

by

The apocolypse
came in like a surreal dream—
clocks and news melting

like a Dali print.
the landscape has turned unreal.
Empty shelves a first

and so many streets
devoid of all passersby...
social distancing.

A sneeze rings out loud
like a shot, and we all freeze
imagining germs.

Suddenly, this life
is our brand new normalcy...
elbow bump hello.

Like toilet paper
predictable is the past.
The weekend won’t end.

Old people wander
looking for things they might need
like egg nog in spring

nothing has a place.
The world becomes untethered
and floats away free.

We wander the dream...
shoppers with carts full of air
trying to wake up.
