HELEN (after Paul Valèry)

Hélène

Azur!

Dont la barbe de sel amusait mes doigts purs;

Militaires rythmer le vol des avirons;

HELEN

(after Paul Valèry)

Blue skies again, I've risen up from silence
to hear the waves once more, their gentle violence,
and see those ships, gliding from the dawn
on silent oars, gilded with the sun.

My empty hands recall dead kings, the way
I'd tease my fingers through their beards, all spray
and salt. They'd boast of wars and victories, killing blows.
I'd watch the sea exploding into billows

behind the speeding ships. I hear again the sound
of conches blown, gathering soldiers round,
and, on the deck, the drumbeat's metronome
urging rowers on. And high on the prows, the foam-

crested gods, smiles weathered by the sea,
stretching their carved, indulgent hands to me.
