Calling it a Day

Familiar socks, familiar hats and shoes.
They comfort, sooth us, bear a sweet caress.
A simple touch can dissipate the blues;
Display them well, they banish all distress.

Adornments and accessories provide
A confidence that buoys us within—
Unless, a source of overweening pride,
They burgeon, seize our souls, become a sin.

You look at me, your heart begins to swell
With warmth and feelings, thoughts of hearth and home.
I make you happy more than words can tell,
Complete and pleased like beer that's topped with foam.

Except I'm not a garment you can wear.
To be a partner—  No, I doubt you care....
