Letter to the Lifeguards Who Brought Me Back

I sailed away from everything I loved
on ships that never were my own to steer.
For months I sailed alone adrift at sea
and wept. The ocean swelled and raised itself
from gentle waves to mountains capped with froth.
I never understood how twigs survive
the storms that sink the biggest, fastest boats,
and yet I still abandoned ship to drown
my fears. The ocean lives in peace and shame
beneath the surface. Sometimes seeing fate
can be a raft, and I remember life:
cascading down to earth in bolts of light!
