The Phantom Mob

The rumbling of the mob? Well, no-one knew
Exactly where it came from, it echoed
From sideways looks, expert guests, autocue
Nudges, prompts, threats, that we would bear a load

Of public shame or fines, losing our job
And though their story was absurd we would
Pretend, in order to avoid the mob:
Such coercion was for the public good

Most people privately didn’t agree
With the one-sided version of events
But assumed those of lesser pedigree
Believed the lies, would let their anger vent.

Now breaking the spell of the phantom mob
Requires that first, one opens one’s gob.
