A mechanical creature resembling my husband
lies in the hospital bed
tubes and wires jutting from every orifice.
Though I do not hold with the idea of an afterlife,
I feel a force strange and wicked
when I take his hand,
like the tree of life has been swayed.
With each whir of the ventilator,
life enters and draws back.
Am I a guest or a ghost
as I stand beside this being
not quite human, not quite not.
