Fate is a rabbit
Broken clock and endless road
Alice and Neo

~~

What is time?
A wind chime blowing
Without rhyme

~~

Where are the relics?
Crumbling symbols, guiding light
Lost Galapagos

~~

Seeking light
In a pinpoint night
Almighty

~~

Ladder to borrow
No bottom to our sorrow
Give hope tomorrow

~~

Waking dreams
Running, forgetting
Hitchhiked means

~~

Through the looking glass
We’re walking a smoky path
In the mind's morass

Note: Written to HaikuHeights’ prompt, “Fate,” on 3/3/12. Written in alternating 5-7-5 and 3-5-3 haiku forms.

Main allusions:

1. Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Alice follows a rabbit down a rabbit hole, entering Wonderland.

2. Larry and Andy Wachowski's Matrix. Neo follows a girl with a white rabbit tattoo on her back to a club where he meets Trinity, leading to a series of events where he realizes his life to that point had been an illusion.

3.The Galapagos Islands were one of the places Charles Darwin visited and collected data that ultimately led to his theory of evolution, which disillusioned many people of their conception of religion at the time, leading some to spiritual despair at losing their "guiding light."

Updated note for the dVerse Poets prompt on 3/15/2012: This haiku series was written in a state of emotional turmoil following of an argument, layered in with a feeling of being at a spiritual crossroads and wondering about the direction of my life. The prompt from Haiku Heights happened to fit my emotional state perfectly.
