In the Absence of Light

As a boy, long ago
I wished on a star
as it rocketed
through darkness above.
Night became day,
and I drifted away,
my wish pocketed -
a fool's dream, is love.

I wandered alone
through shadow and light,
gazed at the abyss
and watched it stare back--
my wish long forgotten,
curdled and rotten,
from years worshipping
a beast with two backs.

In a ravaged wasteland,
I stumbled and fell,
felt the ground open
its wide, hungry maw--
and then she arrived,
with a wish and brown eyes,
took my hand
in her hand, evermore.
