Discontinuity

by ammenj

You walk at a rate
Of 2 yards per second
Up a mountain:
How far do you get in 18 years?
Halfway down the valley
Between your motivation and reason
Because every time you take a step forward,
The vibrations butterfly effect
And shake down the boulders
Of your procrastination,
Rolling you over and sending you tumbling
Twice as far back as you stepped forward.
Likewise, it takes 7 hours
To get 30 minutes of sleep,
And it takes 95% of your energy
To score 50% on that test.

In physics, we learned about time dilation,
Making time slower the faster you go;
So I guess this fatigue has sped up
The seconds until my due date
For getting things together
Even though it’s taken me ages
Just to get out of bed.
I guess I could ask for an extension,
But my professor is all the way up at
The bottom of the mountain,
Waiting for me to begin the journey
Without realizing it began for me
Years ago and right now.

Yet even with all these incongruities,
The limit still exists.
