Fairytales and Wishing Wells

by Deborah Bromlow

When I was just a little girl
Daddy put me on his knee
and told me of the things that I should know.
He said, "Love is you and me
and Honey, I will alway be
here for you if ever there's a need.
And right or wrong I'll stand by you
it doesn't matter what you do
don't ever be afraid to come to me;
there's nothing that I wouldn't do
I'd bear the pain, the hurt for you
my life I'd give to help you if I could."

Well Daddy you made fairytales
seem real and wishing wells
weren't just a part of someone else's dreams;
they were mine
a gift from you
I smile when I think of you
Daddy you are happiness for me.

Now things have changed since yesterday
the drunken man he is today
is not the Daddy in my memories;
but there's something that I'd like to say
I'd proudly take him anyway
he's still my Dad forever and always.
So when a tear rolls down his cheek
I slip my arm through his and seek
the words to tell him everything's ok;
I say, "Love is you and me
and Daddy I will always be
here for you if ever there's a need.
And right or wrong I'll stand by you
it doesn't matter what you do
don't ever be afraid to come to me;
there's nothing that I wouldn't do
I'd bear the pain, the hurt for you
my life I'd give to help you if I could.

Cause Daddy you made fairytales
seem real and wishing wells
weren't just a part of someone else's dreams;
they were mine
a gift from you
I smile when I think of you
Daddy you are happiness for me.
