The Martian seas dried a billion years ago
when Earth's top carnivores were prokaryotic "sharks"
meadows tossed in thin breezes, blue petals
reached for pollinators, sky
no vases displayed fourth-planet buds
but a last billion sex organs
withered in the gathering cold
sand buried them
