Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore

Another ice age recedes.
We visit Earth on vacation
to see the wonders of this world.

Ravaged by time’s passage
like the ancient Sphinx,
their noses are worn off,
but their recessed eyes remain
fathomless, containing histories
within the granite.

I bring my wife to see this marvel.
She gasps in wonder, touches
her air holes with her tentacles.
“Almost human, like us!”
“Yes,” I say. “Almost.”
