Now Departing

by Tarlia

After the threat of storm and the no-show
The sky was a blaze of sunset hues and
Double rainbows, as if sorry for the fuss earlier
She drove towards the sunset wondering
When the credits will roll, in the rear view mirror
The rainbows have been replaced by dark clouds
It turned so quickly and without warning
Her phone, face up in the passenger seat
Vibrating, his name lighting up the screen
Her black eye throbbing with every pulse
She ran out of doors to run into so
She just stopped running into other people
Outside the sky showed different faces
Her life had always been about
Chasing sunsets and running from storms
Sometimes she couldn’t get away fast enough
He would apologise, faithfully
She would believe him, always
She could hear his messages dropping into her inbox
Each message delivered as fists
Last night, she had her senses pounded into her
And it finally broke through
She drove towards the sunset knowing
She no longer cared about eggshells
