Would You Still Love Me?

        The troubled young girl thought

if you found out I’m not the little angel you think I am,
the one you seem to worship,
         would you still love me?

           She wondered

if you allowed yourself to see that I—
just like you—
have a dark side,
         would you still love me?

            She pondered

if you discovered that I—
just like you—
have buried parts of an unsavory past,
          would you still love me?

          Her mind screamed

if you knew how miserable I am
perched on this pedestal you’ve tied me to,
          would you still love me?
