In the bay of Matsuho of Awaji Island

In the bay of Matsuho of Awaji Island
visible from the breakwater of Nakizumi,
there is, I hear, a girl of the sea
who in the morning calm reaps lovely seaweed,
in the evening calm burns seaweed for salt;
but because I have no means of going to see her,
manliness gone out of my heart,
thoughts pent up like a weak-armed woman's,
going back and forth, I keep longing for her,
without boat or oar.

ENVOYS

If only I had a boat and oar to go look at the girls reaping seaweed, high though the waves
may be!

I walk about and look, but never tire of the white waves rolling in on Nakizumi's
breakwater beach
