To SARAH GORDON
Too many years have touched you now;
Your gentle hands that bless us yet,
The clearer candour of your brow,
Bring us our first regret.
This thing is hard to us, that while,
In ministrancies untired and new
Forgetting self, you wait and smile,
Yet time forgets not you.
I set your name herein — receive
My reverence with my poems' dear hours:
Ah, if they should endure, this leaf
Would hold you always ours.
