Changing Runners

Trailing along the wet sea sand
And through the valley it is borne.
And in the woods the burning brand
Seems now advancing, now withdrawn
As the swift, flagging feet come on
To one that waits half up the height
With muscles tightening; the light
Dips as it passes from hand to hand,
And over the mountain the torch is gone!
