On the death of King Charles I

[On the death of King Charles I.]

But mention not the horrid execrable cause
That made our Nation wretched in his Loss;
Let not the conscious Marble tell
What Crimes forc'd him to Heav'n, and those that forc'd him hence to Hell
Lest proud Usurpers, who shall after be.
Take hence their Patterns of successful Villany;
Lest Heav'n (who like our gracious Monarch to at last
(We hope) an Act of Amnesty has past)
By seeing it should mindful grow
Of what Arrears it still dos ow,
And send fresh Judgements down
And make us in new Plagues our Guilt attone.
