Desire

To-day I am consumed by a strange passion
That finds no solace in your beloved face.
You strive to comfort me in your dear fashion
And efface
The stark loneliness that fills all space.

Though you the cause the blame it is not yours
The more you give the greater the desire;
That even in consummation there endures
A fire
That in the fuel of ecstasy burns higher.

Is it that Life declines to pacify
The hungry heart with some enduring bliss,
Fearing if things of earth should satisfy
We'd miss
A more enduring heaven beyond this?

But even if love remains incessant striving,
A mad destiny entangling us two,
An endless journeying without arriving,
I'll still pursue,
Expectant still, the fleeting form of you.
