The Half Century

A boyhood, ardent minded to achieve
Its vision of the ideal in vigilant verse.
An old man, blindly asking to believe
World wickedness foredoomed to work no worse.

Youth, following fantasies he took for truth,
Led by his heart's hosannas overheard.
Age, reading in the book of life with ruth
For innocents who wait the unwritten word.
