Inscription for a Picture

Coop'd up within this Ball of Clay,
Long fluttering round he did essay
To break the Chains that ty'd him down,
Surmount Life's Barriers and be gone.
Uncag'd at last he wing'd above,
Out-soar'd the Seraphs in their Love.
They strove to follow, still he flew,
Still they their flaming Stroaks renew;
Till dimm'd at last with beaming Rays,
Too dazling for Seraphic Eyes,
They flagg'd their Pinions, vail'd their Sight,
Then wheel'd about and left their Flight,
While with expanded Wings he fac'd the Light.
