Kinderscout
O heart, why did you knock
So loudly on that sky-bound wall of rock?
Was it to see again
Behind the weeping rain
No, not the Edge of Kinderscout,
But visionary hills long since burnt out?
Here is nothing but black peat-hags
Where a slow Lethe drags;
Peat-hags pitted and pitted by frost
As though a flock were lost
Or in the mist
With shepherd kept a hidden tryst.
So loudly on that sky-bound wall of rock?
Was it to see again
Behind the weeping rain
No, not the Edge of Kinderscout,
But visionary hills long since burnt out?
Here is nothing but black peat-hags
Where a slow Lethe drags;
Peat-hags pitted and pitted by frost
As though a flock were lost
Or in the mist
With shepherd kept a hidden tryst.
