Life of Tojun

Old Tojun was of the Enomoto family, and his grandfather was a farmer-squire in Katada in Goshu by the name of Takeshita. The Enomotos were the family on Shinshi's mother's side. Seventy-two years old this year, he looked at the autumn moon from the bed where he lay ill, and enjoying flowers and birds, sorrowing over the dew, his soul remained undisturbed till the end. Then he left a hokku on Sarashina as a keepsake and died peacefully through his faith in the Lotus Sutra. When young he learned medicine and made it his source of income; receiving a stipend from Lord Honda, he had little trouble making ends meet. Nevertheless, he came to dislike his worldly routine and discarded the accouterments of his reputable profession. That was when he was already in his early sixties. He turned his city residence into a mountain hut. He enjoyed himself, never letting his brush go, never leaving his desk, for about ten years, and the amount he wrote during that time was more than enough to fill a cart. Born near the lake, he died in the eastern plain. He was no doubt " a great hermit living in a city " :
