Lilies

If the stars are but footprints
Where the angels have trod,
What are maidens but lilies
In the garden of God?

What but daughters of light,
Who in silence declare
Their devotion and love,
With heads bowed in prayer?

But, if lilies " toil not, "
How is it they weave
A wreath of sweet smiles,
Yet deign to deceive?

While they flaunt, and seem gay,
In their raiment of gold,
Why at heart are they sad
With a " secret untold " ?
