Nature's Mysteries
Nature ! deign to drop thy veil,
For a little moment's space;
Well I know, its folds conceal
Many a miracle of grace.
Well I know, that deep within,
Move in a mysterious scheme,
Things immortal, things divine, —
Fairer than the heart can dream.
O, might I but look behind,
What a blaze of glory bright,
In thy hidden depth enshrin'd,
Would confound my dazzled sight!
Substances of beauty rare,
Unconceiv'd by human thought,
Whence, as in a tissue fair,
All that we behold is wrought!
Living light, in ebb and flow!
Paradisal imagery!
Angels glancing to and fro
In the clear transparency!
Ah, if nature's outward dress
Is so beauteous, as we see;
What must not the beauteousness
Of its inner glory be!
For a little moment's space;
Well I know, its folds conceal
Many a miracle of grace.
Well I know, that deep within,
Move in a mysterious scheme,
Things immortal, things divine, —
Fairer than the heart can dream.
O, might I but look behind,
What a blaze of glory bright,
In thy hidden depth enshrin'd,
Would confound my dazzled sight!
Substances of beauty rare,
Unconceiv'd by human thought,
Whence, as in a tissue fair,
All that we behold is wrought!
Living light, in ebb and flow!
Paradisal imagery!
Angels glancing to and fro
In the clear transparency!
Ah, if nature's outward dress
Is so beauteous, as we see;
What must not the beauteousness
Of its inner glory be!
