Ode, An. To the Right Honourable Charles, Lord Halifax - Part 3
III.
In Fate's mysterious Book, I lately read,
And as I view'd who were to die,
Or were already dead;
I found th' appointed Day drew near,
In which a tuneful Heroe shou'd appear;
A Heroe! by the strictest Honour fir'd,
With ev'ry Virtue blest, by ev'ry Muse inspir'd!
Who with sweet Numbers, and exalted Lays,
Should charm my William's Cares, should sing my William's Praise.
Assist ye Gods! your sev'ral Gifts bestow,
Each Particle refine,
In this one Structure all your Powers show,
But let your richest Gifts adorn his Mind:
For ne'er since my beloved William's Birth,
Gave I so great a Blessing to the Earth.
