Pearls

I gave them the gold of my spirit
My heart-hidden treasures I poured,
My joys and my loves and my longings —
They gave me back stones in reward.

But mark ye, I know how to handle
The stones of the ignorant throng;
And, lo, when they enter my spirit
They turn into pearls of song!
