Poems from the Henn Manuscript - Part 12

Meseemed along a hidden lane
In melancholy spring
We walked amid the breath of violets;
And as we walked, far bells began to ring
Sweetly: whereat a sudden pang of pain
Smote us, and left me weak with strange regrets.
And now I walk alone: one violet
Was sweet a while ago;
And what has been, I know not: but I know
That here mine eyes are wet, and the leaves wet:
And deep bells toll and pause and toll again:
Wherefore I walk alone along this lane.
