Poetical Plea for the Daisy
For commonwealth a common flower,
Proof to pierce sun and pelting shower,
Suits best, and in the land
Thick as the stars doth stand
That simple flower of humble station,
Hardy and fair, the flower of the people,
True flower of the nation.
The daisy, day's eye, glint of the day,
The starlike flower with circled ray,
Be our symbol of light,
Be our emblem of right,
Our shamrock, our thistle; in all creation
No flower shall match thee, flower of the people,
True flower of the nation!
The rose, the lily, the violet sweet,
Others have claimed; in thee we greet,
Unclaimed among flowers,
The one flower that is ours.
No Old World history, hint or relation
Spoils thee for us, white flower of the people,
True flower of the nation!
Proof to pierce sun and pelting shower,
Suits best, and in the land
Thick as the stars doth stand
That simple flower of humble station,
Hardy and fair, the flower of the people,
True flower of the nation.
The daisy, day's eye, glint of the day,
The starlike flower with circled ray,
Be our symbol of light,
Be our emblem of right,
Our shamrock, our thistle; in all creation
No flower shall match thee, flower of the people,
True flower of the nation!
The rose, the lily, the violet sweet,
Others have claimed; in thee we greet,
Unclaimed among flowers,
The one flower that is ours.
No Old World history, hint or relation
Spoils thee for us, white flower of the people,
True flower of the nation!
