Of the Power of the New Virgin-Body
Done in a Pensive longing, in Febr: 1699.
1.
Alas how blind must be to Temporal things the Eye
Which shall the Glory see of the light Eternity!
In truth, shall thy Desire in Heaven still remain,
So must thou all what is of Temporals refrain.
2.
How Dumb must be the Mouth from Earthly things [ ]
Shall God divide thy Tongue by's Sprits fiery power:
Shall thy Hearts fire but come with Heav'nly flame to burn,
So must it wholly from all other business turn.
3.
How leer must be the Soul from Thinking & from Willings
If that the Glory of the Lord her shall be filling!
And shall the Lord at last himself to her reveal,
So must she not in Spirit with Timely troubles deal.
4.
She must in Spirit & Day of God be Recollected,
Like unto John & Paul, from sences quite distracted:
Forgetting their own selves, & ne'er a word in place,
Then Views the Lord himself in her with open face.
5.
O Holy Day of God! break on in us for ever!
Chace out the Darksom Night, with all its Lights of Errour,
Hunt out all gloomy Clouds, Thou Pow'rful Shining Sun!
Erect also in us, for Thee, O God thy Throne!
6.
Command the Soul her Sea, her Passions to relinquish!
And let her anctious fire in Light of love extinguish!
Prepare the Temple too, the holy Virgin-life!
Of Wisdoms beauty full, the Lamb his Bride & Wife.
7.
Let Her sink perfectly into his groundless Essence!
Into her Mother's House, where She may have by presence:
So draw her forth from Place, from Sence & time that she
In Time, & evermore, thy pleasant Consort be Amen.
