A Prayer

God, whose all-seeing Eye
Sweeps land and sea,
Hark! how Thy people cry,
Piteously.

Stay! stay this awful war,
Spreading from shore to shore,
Say that it be no more,
We beseech thee.

We have unrighteous been,
For self did live.
This Thy pure Eyes have seen,
Canst Thou forgive?
God, the wide seas enfold
Those it was ours to hold,
Close in a love untold,
Father forgive.

Pity the eyes that ache
With Mother's tears,
Pity the hearts that break
With Mothers' fears.
Stay the red rifles' rain,
Envoy of blood and pain,
Oh! give us peace again
For Jesu's sake.
