Prayer Under Affliction

Almighty Power, who wings the storm,
And calms the raging wind,
Restore health to my wasted form,
And tranquillize my mind.

For, ah! how poignant is the grief
Which self-misconduct brings,
When racking pains find no relief,
And injur'd conscience stings.

Let penitence forgiveness plead,
Hear lenient mercy's claims,
Thy justice let be satisfied,
And blotted out my crimes.

But should thy sacred law of right,
Seek life a sacrifice,
O! haste that awful, solemn night,
When death shall veil mine eyes.
