Reason

Since Reason, with itself dissatisfied,
Has striven so long to burst the natural chain
Which guards it from the nebulous inane,
There have been many follies deified.
This age has loosen'd an irreverent tide
To wash old landmarks rear'd by Faith with pain:
Love, Law, Religion, these are symbols vain
Since Reason wedded her Arch-Enemy, Pride .
Thus while she serves to flatter dunce & fool
She were best banish't for no more is she
Wisdom's sweet handmaid at her starr'd footstool,
The champion of secure humility,
The seat of Faith, the source & the guide,
But a blind light that gropes in darkness wide.
