Retreat from Eternity

Just now I stared out on a star-strange night
With man's habitual wonder at the sight,
And the old lonely question — stellar space
Coincident wherefore with one human face?

Then, while the firelight flickered, musing here,
I saw, in mimic constellation shown,
Reflected sparkles on the chandelier,
And was no more benumbed by the unknown.
