The Round Table
For no man wist who was best
Nor in arms doughtiest—
Did he ordain the Round Table
That men tell of many fable.
None sat within, none sat without,
But all ever round about;
None sat first, none sat last,
But peer by peer ever cast;
None sat high, none sat low,
But all evenly for to know;
None was set at the end,
But all around and all were hende;
None wist who of them most was,
For they sat all in compass;
All at once, down they sitten,
At once rose, when they had eaten,
All were served of a service,
Evenly all of an assize.
Nor in arms doughtiest—
Did he ordain the Round Table
That men tell of many fable.
None sat within, none sat without,
But all ever round about;
None sat first, none sat last,
But peer by peer ever cast;
None sat high, none sat low,
But all evenly for to know;
None was set at the end,
But all around and all were hende;
None wist who of them most was,
For they sat all in compass;
All at once, down they sitten,
At once rose, when they had eaten,
All were served of a service,
Evenly all of an assize.
