What vague enchantment fascinates my breast?
What lure unseen decoys my steps along?
What spell of utterance faint, of influence strong,
Persuades the soul to some sublimer quest?
By what new rapture shall she be possest?
Ennobled how amid the human throng?
Darling of Fortune? minister of Song?
Or in Love's arms more exquisitely blest?
Not with the augur's science have I spied
To scan what this fair mystery may mean:
Knowing what Spirit alway at my side
Hath stood through various life's disordered scene,
Meekly I follow that divinest Guide,
Led by his hand as I have ever been.
