Shah Sandschar, whose lowest slave
Shah Sandschar, whose lowest slave
Is on this earth a king;
The mole of his despotic command
Adorns men & daemons.
When his wrath burns on earth,
Nothing in heaven is secure.
Looks he on the world with power,
Life mounts in it.
Where his name is named,
Is the love of gold unknown.
Death, out of fear of him, clatters his dry bones.
The deep-hid secret is discovered by thy wit;
Unrest is stilled by thee, unrest which know no limits.
When thy wrath glowed
The wolves become tame in the wood,
The world would not stand, if thy foot held it not firm,
In the desart, his breath restores the equipoise of the air.
The Lion of the Zodiack is a picture of the lions of his banner.
Hope leads his light bridle,
His heavy stirrup leads death.
Ambush of destiny lies
For all, behind his arrow.
When his bow moves,
It is already the Last Day.
Whom his onset marks out,
To him is life not appointed:
And the ghost of the Holy Ghost
Were not sure of its time.
None holds himself once firm in the stirrup, save Victory.
A hundred conquerors heaven strikes dead
Before thee, as thy right.
O Lord, take him into thy pay. It is his only wish.
Is he not of thy circle? Stands he yet at thy door?
Buy him, ere thou yet knowest him,
Or instantly his price will rise.
Once every ten years let him kiss thy hand,
Only one day let him stand in thy Forecourts.
Suffer in thy lands, o Shah! a poet, tho' rough & rude,
But in thy praise is he finer than a hair.
Steadily so long as the tongue speaks, sounds thy name in prayer.
As long as there is gold, will thy name be coined on it.
Of thee, Time stands in need, as Space stands in need of Time;
So long as men give & take, Thou shalt give & take lordship.
Rule thou forever, so will rule subsist.
