The Signing

Song is unrest;
It lives in the blood,
It flames in my pulses,
It rhythms this flood
Of people passing.

Quiet may sweep,
Water-slow, down my fingers,
Though my blood will not sleep.

The street may be cold stone,
Yet people sing by,
For the reason they live,
And the reason they die.
