Tears

When o'er the crested wood the sun, uprising,
Had made the valley dew-drops gleam, a maiden
With tears of joy went forth to meet her lover,
Who, looking in her eyes, addressed her, smiling:
" You wept at my departure, now returning
I once again behold you weep. Kind maiden,
What is the difference in these tears, pray tell me? "
" Just the same difference, " the girl said softly,
" As between evening dew and dew of morning:
One kind the sun lights up and then disperses,
The other bides in darkness all the night long. "
