In Town

I love you in the vehement life of town,
The pulsing high-ways, the gay market places:
The masque of various players, king and clown,
Philosopher and fool: the passing faces;
The sense of brotherhood with all I meet.
I love you in the wonder of night's falling,
The blossoming of lights in every street,
The pearl-shell sky, pale river, voices calling
The news of town: the homeward-pressing throng,
The gay shop windows with their varied treasure;
Street melody, a snatch of careless song,
Lovers arm-linked, the carnival of pleasure.
O ardent soul, my friend, the town is dear
Because in every street I feel you near.
